Action for Relief and Development Assistance (AFREDA) is a Tanzania, National, Voluntary, Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), whose purpose is to promote the livelihood, income, health, education, nutrition, peace and human rights status of poor men, poor women and poor children in Tanzania, East Africa, through facilitation and implementation of integrated community development projects and programmes. AFREDA has its headquarters in Dar es Salaam.
AFREDA target groups are People Living with AIDS, caretakers of AIDS orphans, interest group members (farmers groups in Lindi), school children, out of school girls, community leaders, farmers, rural community members in the villages, diarists, theatre group members, vulnerable women entrepreneurs. AFREDA’s main approaches include: on-site training, use of theatre, use of school clubs/back home, people own process (POP), exchange learning visits as well as use of educative materials i.e. brochures, pamphlets and T shirts. AFREDA works in close cooperation and partnership with village Governments (local government in rural areas).

AFREDA envisages a Tanzania free of poverty by the year 2030.
2.3 Organization strategic goals
Promote the availability of adequate social services i.e. health, sanitation, education, water, nutrition, housing, literacy to rural and urban residents.
Contribute to the prevention of HIV and AIDS spread, promote HIV and AIDS voluntary testing and counseling and contribute to efforts aimed at supporting infected and affected persons.
Reduce household and individual poverty through economic empowerment as well as improved crop production, income generation activities, employment creation as well as improved processing, packaging, storage and market linkages.
Facilitate processes of Advocacy and Lobbying at Local, National and international levels.
Promote environment conservation, wildlife conservation and eco-tourism.
Strengthen efforts to combat and mitigate impact and effects of climate change.
Promote peace, human rights, Civil Society, Democracy and Good Governance
Promote population issues, safe motherhood as well as sexual and reproductive health and rights.
Strengthen gender equality as well as the Socio-Economic development of women. youth and children.
Promote culture, arts, dance, music and sports
Perform any other activity that falls within the Organization’s mission.

WHAT WE DO
We work through implementation of projects and programs in Tanzania. Main themes that we work in and activities that we do are the following:
AGRICULTURE, FOOD SECURITY AND INCOME STRENGTHENING PROGRAMME.
With regard to Agriculture and food security, AFREDA has supported and continues to support farmers in the areas of crop rotation, crop storage, irrigation, food processing, organic farming, vegetable gardening, cultivation of drought resilient crops, soil erosion control, terrace farming, pest control and crop diversification. A total number of 200,000 farmers in the Regions of Mara, Morogoro, Kagera, Tabora, Lindi, Kilimanjaro, Tanga and Coast farmers have benefited and continue to benefit from AFREDA agriculture and food security extension work and the 200,000 directly supported farmers have supported and continue to support over 4,000,000 household members most of who are children in school and out of school. The use of theater groups, demonstration farms, diarists who take stock and information on changes occurring in the community in relation to AFREDA’s intervention is emphasized. Another emphasis is on making sure that any intervention includes people with disabilities. With regard to income strengthening over 100,000 women and over 700,000 youth in the Regions of Mara, Morogoro, Kagera, Tabora, Lindi, Kilimanjaro, Tanga and Coast have benefited from AFREDA income generation support programs which have included capital provision for small businesses as well as training in credit management and links with financial institutions.
